HPHY Announces Inaugural Graduate Teaching Award Winner
HPHY is excited to announce its inaugural Graduate Teaching Award winner – Austin Hocker.
A rigorous rubric was used to evaluate the applications, and Austin rose to the top specifically due to the incredible investment he has made regarding professional development as an educator in the five years he has been at the University of Oregon. For example, Austin completed an online course titled “An Introduction to Evidence-Based Undergraduate STEM Education”, lead a workshop in 2015 for the NW Biology Instructors Organization titled “Identifying Core Teaching Values: Aligning philosophy and pedagogy”, contributed to a discipline-based education research project recently accepted for publication in Advances in Physiology Education, and participated in numerous Teaching Effectiveness Program and Science Literacy Program workshops and journal clubs. He is currently working towards his Graduate Teaching Initiative certificate through the Teaching Effectiveness Program. Austin joined the Department of Human Physiology in 2011 to begin a Master’s degree researching muscle physiology and is currently pursuing his doctoral degree under the mentorship of Dr. Adrianne Huxtable investigating the neural control of breathing. Since arriving at UO he has taught in six different classes, and has been the lead instructor for both HPHY 211 Medical Terminology, and HPHY 322 Human Physiology I. Austin is known for his commitment to excellence, professionalism, desire to learn, intellectual ability and willingness to question the status quo. He is an exceptional student, colleague and teacher and we are thrilled to recognize his efforts through this Graduate Teaching Award.
